Know what you want
Walk onto the lot knowing the type of car you need. If you need seven seats, say so. If you want excellent gas mileage, say that too. Prioritize your wants and needs so that you can find the right car.
Avoid distractions
If possible, leave family and friends at home when you’re car shopping. With the kids in tow, you can often find yourself in a situation where they’re trying to talk you into a car you don’t want because they like the car. Bring someone with you if you wish to help negotiate or to help you determine the quality of the vehicle, but don’t be pressured into buying a car you don’t want by a family member or a friend.
Don’t be in a rush
Remember that you can always come back, or go to another dealer. If you don’t like a vehicle, feel like a salesperson is too pushy, or can’t find the right car, you can leave. Don’t feel as though you must buy a car right then and there. If the problem is with an employee, report the problem to the sales manager at another time or on the telephone.
