Jeep Dealerships Talk Tow Hooks and Front Hitches

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Your Denville-area Jeep dealer knows that Jeep is the best brand of vehicle you can take off road. Since the early days, Jeeps have been designed with the idea that they can get anywhere.

One of the things to think about when taking your Jeep off road is how to get your jeep unstuck in those instances where it becomes stuck. This process, known as recovery, can be accomplished in one of two ways, with either a front hitch or with tow hooks.

Tow hooks have a fairly small footprint, and they look like standard equipment. However, they’re not always the best way to get unstuck. When you use tow hooks for recovery, you have to take care of the angle you use so they don’t break or bend. In addition, when you use tow hooks, your Jeep is only being pulled one side at a time. Tow hooks are ideal if you don’t get stuck very often.

The serious off road enthusiast needs something more extreme, however. A front hitch provides much more stable and reliable recovery. It isn’t likely that a front hitch will break or even bend. However, it does hang lower than tow hooks and lessens your approach angle. Still, a front hitch is idea for when you expect to do a lot of recovery.

Jeep Dealerships Offer Off Road Advice

Your local Jeep dealerships know that off roading is one of the most exciting things you can do with your Jeep.

The Jeep was designed, originally, to travel through just about any kind of terrain you can find. Whether you’re driving through the woods or across town, a Jeep is the best vehicle to be in.

When you do decide to go off road with your Jeep, there are some things to keep in mind:

  • Always drive within your ability. Make sure you take your time driving on the trail, so that you can pick a smooth path and you can react to changing terrain. If you go too fast, you could cause all sorts of problems, from a hole in your oil pan to knocking off your oil filter.
  • Look ahead. Always keep an eye out for what’s coming. Survey the road before you enter it, if possible. You want to make sure that there’s not a cliff, or just a dead end before you get there.
  • Drive straight. Driving diagonally down hills or steep terrain will increase your likelihood of a rollover.
  • Try to cross obstacles like logs or ditches so that only one wheel is going over the obstacle at a time. This helps the vehicle to be able to climb over.

Following these four simple tips when taking your Jeep off road will save you all sorts of headaches.
